Sharks in South Australia
Some of the other sharks found in South Australia include white shark, bronze
whaler, dusky whaler, school shark, gummy shark, smooth hammerhead, common thresher, wobbegong, blue shark, shortfin mako, porbeagle, sevengill, southern sawshark, Port Jackson, and very occasionally, grey nurse. South Australia is an important place for white shark, as they travel here to dine on energy rich seals and snapper. Due to concerns about their declining numbers, the white shark
became protected under South Australia’s legislation. With the exception of school and gummy sharks which are targeted by commercial fisheries, there is limited information about the status of shark populations in South Australia. However, fishing of some sharks is regulated under the Fisheries Management Act 2007.
