How did our satellite tracking project begin?
The website began through concerns about the health of an individual sea lion who lives on the Adelaide coastline in South Australia.
But it is impossible to care about one animal without caring about its environment and all the other creatures that share it.
We are now expanding the Henry project because we needed to understand more about the earth’s marine ecosystems, so we know the best ways to protect it for future generations.
It’s amazing that we know more about the surface of the faraway planet Mars than we do about the remote corners of the oceans on our own planet.
As we begin to understand more about marine animals that hunt and forage for food, we discover more about how they interact with their marine environment.
By tracking and studying the behaviour of these natural explorers, we are learning about how deep they dive, how far they travel and what they do when they get there. Some real surprises have unfolded.
Through this work we are rapidly expanding our understanding of how the ocean and coastal ecosystems are linked.
